Understanding Light and Shadow

One of the key elements in creating  silhouettes in street photography is understanding light and shadow. Silhouettes are formed when the subject is backlit, meaning that the light source is behind them, resulting in their figure appearing as a dark shape against a brighter background. To achieve this effect, it's important to pay attention to the direction and intensity of light in the scene. Look for strong light sources such as the sun or street lamps that can create dramatic silhouettes.

Additionally, the angle of the light can also affect the silhouette. Experiment with shooting from different angles to see how the light interacts with the subject. Keep in mind that the more backlighting you have, the stronger the silhouette will be. However, be careful not to overexpose the background, as it can wash out the details of the silhouette.
